India - Bhagyalakshmi temple built near Char Minar Hydrabad

 Apr 4, 2013,  HYDERABAD: The Bhagyalakshmi temple which abuts the historic Charminar is an 'unauthorized construction' and was built post 1959, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said, responding to an RTI query on the status of the temple and the raging debate over its existence for years.

In a reply furnished to RTI activist SQ Masood, the ASI said it considered the temple 'which has been constructed adjacent to the south eastern minar of Charminar, an unauthorized construction' in light of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (AMASR) (1958), Rules 1959, AMASR Act, 2010 (amendment and validation).

"I had made a representation to ASI late last year and urged them to take immediate action against those who have encroached various monuments such as Charminar and Golconda fort," Masood said.

Along with answers to six questions on the application, the ASI also furnished three photographs from its own archives, taken over a span of 53 years - the first in 1959, the second in 1980 and finally in 2003 - showing the south eastern side of Charminar.

While no structure is seen in the picture taken in 1959, the photograph taken in the early 1980s shows the temple was a later addition and did not predate the monument as argued by Hindu groups.

The Bhagyalakshmi temple issue courted controversy and created tension in the Old City last year when temple committee members put up a 'temporary' shelter and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen legislators and supporters protested for weeks.

In a similar incident of unauthorized construction within the vicinity of Charminar, the police stopped the construction of the Mahadev temple also known as the Shivam temple on April 2, which they said was within 200 metres of the monument. However, letters written by superintending archaeologist R Krishnaiah to the police state that the temple construction 'was going on in full swing' within the 100 metre prohibited area.

He had also lodged an FIR on November 12 last year against temple committee member Ajay Kumar Agarwal, for going ahead with construction without ASI's permission.

Further, the high court on December 6 last year had ordered the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to stop construction of the Mahadev temple, but the construction continued till April 2.
