Myanmar: Myanmar faces mounting pressure over Rohingya refugee exodus

COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh: Pressure mounted on Myanmar to end violence that has sent about 370,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh, with the United States calling for protection of civilians and Bangladesh urging safe zones to enable refugees to go home. But China, which competes for influence in its southern neighbour with the United States, said it backed Myanmar's efforts to safeguard "development and stability". The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar says its security forces are fighting Rohingya militants behind a surge of violence in Rakhine state that began on Aug. 25, and they are doing all they can to avoid harming civilians. The government says about 400 people have been killed in the fighting, the latest in the western state. The top U.N. human rights official denounced Myanmar on Monday for conducting a "cruel military operation" against Rohingya, branding it "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing". The United St...

Myanmar : Myanmar violence leaves 98 dead as Rohingya Muslims flee into Bangladesh

PHOTO:  There are about 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar.  (Reuters: Mohammad Ponir Hossain) Thousands of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar are trying to cross the border with Bangladesh, Bangladeshi security officials say, as fresh fighting erupted in Myanmar's north-western Rakhine state. The death toll from widespread attacks staged by Rohingya insurgents on Friday has climbed to 98, including nearly 80 insurgents and 12 members of the security forces, the Government said, prompting it to evacuate staff and villagers from some areas. The attacks marked a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since last October, when a similar offensive prompted a major military sweep beset by allegations of serious human rights abuses. The treatment of approximately 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar has emerged as the biggest challenge for national leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who late on Friday condemned the morning raids — in whi...

Residents accuse security forces of shooting 'indiscriminately' at the Muslim minority, forcing thousands to flee. India: An Open Call For Violence Against Beef Eaters And 'Seculars'

At The 'Hindu Rashtra' Conclave In Goa, An Open Call For Violence Against Beef Eaters And 'Seculars' A rising star in the Hindutva circuit, Sadhvi Saraswati was on fire at the "Hindu Rashtra" conclave, which is currently underway in Goa. Not only did the self-appointed God woman spew venom against Muslims, she made an open call for violence against beef eaters and "seculars." The Sadhvi also said that Hindus should arm themselves to "save our women from love jihad." Saraswati said, "Whoever harms cow or abuses the country can only be termed as our enemy. Those politicians who are supporting the consumption of beef in the country and those who see it as a status symbol should be publicly executed by the government. Protection of the cow is our duty. We should apply the same laws which are applied for homicide cases against people found butchering cattle." Saraswati also said, "Pehle Hindu ko hi Hindu banana hai (first ...

India: An unnoticed fact: the RSS, India’s biggest NGO, gets foreign funding too / حقيقة لا يلاحظها أحد: منظمة رسس، أكبر منظمة غير حكومية في الهند، تحصل على تمويل أجنبي أيضا

An unnoticed fact: the RSS, India’s biggest NGO, gets foreign funding too In 2002, a citizens' report documented how a US-based charity was funneling funds to Sangh entities in India. Over the past couple of days, the alleged misdeeds of NGOs have been hotly debated in television studios and on the social media. The storm was set off by a series in The Indian Express, revealing that a 21-page Intelligence Bureau report has claimed that foreign-funded non-governmental organisations have been “negatively impacting economic development”. The newspaper said that the environmental group Greenpeace had been singled out for attention, as had other groups agitating against nuclear power projects, mining plans and attempting to organise construction labour. It has since transpired that a portion of the IB report plagiarised portions of a speech delivered by Narendra Modi in 2006 to mark the launch of a book called NGOs, Activists & Foreign Funds: Anti-Nation Industry. The Expre...

India : RSS vaccine': Muslim students in Assam flee schools fearing forced sterilisation

Classes in three schools in Guwahati had to be called off much earlier than their scheduled time as more than 80 percent of the students were taken back by their parents in fear after a rumour spread that the BJP led government in Assam is going to sterilise the Muslim students to control birth rate. The incident on Tuesday was seen in continuum with similar incidents that took place in remote parts of Assam on Monday after the health department intensified the drive to vaccinate against Japanese Encephalitis. Representational image. Reuters "The classes were going on regularly till 11:30 am in the morning today. But suddenly a number of guardians came to the school and informed that they want to take back their students to their homes, as they feared that the students will be sterilised in the school in the pretext of vaccination," said Manoj Senapati, a teacher in one of the schools. However, as Senapati confirmed, there was no programme of vaccination in the s...
