shifting messaging raising questions about the endgame.

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Anna Burns-Francis, Al Jazeera's special coverage from Washington DC examines the confusion surrounding the US war on Iran as it enters its third week, with President Trump's shifting messaging raising questions about the endgame. White House correspondent Mike Hanna reports that the administration has offered no clarity on the mission objectives or timeline, with statements ranging from "it's over" to "it's just the beginning," leaving Americans wary of another prolonged conflict. The programme features Jason Campbell, a former Pentagon official now with the Middle East Institute, and Charles Kupchan from the Council on Foreign Relations, a former Obama advisor. Campbell argues the mixed messaging allows flexibility but masks unresolved political goals, while noting that Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz gives it significant leverage. Kupchan suggests regime change is now "off the table...

three weeks into war

Nearly three weeks into the US and Israeli war on Iran, supply chain disruptions are affecting far more than oil and gas. Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, halting shipments of aluminium, helium, sulphur and urea—commodities critical to aerospace, semiconductors, fertiliser production and medical imaging. Aluminium prices have jumped to multi-year highs, Qatar has stopped helium output after attacks on its LNG facilities, and fertiliser shortages threaten global food supplies. Analysts warn the longer the disruptions continue, the greater the chaos across industries. Al Jazeera's Um-e-Kulsoom Shariff reports from Doha, Qatar. Credit Al Jazeera 17 3 2026

Iran effectively blocked the key shipping route

The US is facing growing isolation over its plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran effectively blocked the key shipping route, after the US and Israel launched a military offensive on Iran. A fifth of the world's crude oil and liquified natural gas normally passes through the shipping channel. President Trump has called for countries to send war ships and mine sweepers to ensure tankers can transit safely. But he has been frustrated by the lack of support. Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, marking the first direct contact between the two sides since Iranian missile and drone attacks repeatedly struck areas inside Qatar. During the call, Sheikh Mohammed firmly rejected Iran’s claim that its forces targeted only US assets in Qatar. He said the strikes hit civilian and residential areas, including near Hamad International Airport, as well as vital infrastructure and LNG facilities. The Qatari government described the attacks as a blatant violation of sovereignty and international law. Sheikh Mohammed accused Tehran of escalating tensions and attempting to drag neighbouring states into a war not of their choosing. He called for an immediate halt to attacks on states that have sought to remain outside the conflict. While reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to diplomacy, he warned that any aggression affecting its sovereignt...

stock markets in Europe are falling for a second day

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to “set fire” to any ships that try to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Brigadier General Ebrahim Jabari, adviser to the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, says it will not allow US access to any oil. As a result of all that turmoil around the Strait of Hormuz, stock markets in Europe are falling for a second day, following declines in Asia. South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index tumbled by as much as 6.4 percent. That briefly prompted regulators to halt trading, by triggering a mechanism intended to prevent major market swings. European gas prices jumped more than 20 percent to the highest level in three years. That's after Qatar's state-owned energy firm halted liquefied natural gas production on Monday, citing Iranian missile attacks on its facilities.
